What I do.

I help leadership teams make better use of technology - and make better decisions about it.

My work tends to sit across a few connected areas.

You might have a problem in one of them.

More often, you'll have a problem that crosses several.

The important thing is that you don't need to work out which “service” you need before we talk.

Start with the problem.

AI & Automation

“We know AI is important. What should we actually be doing with it?”

I help organisations move beyond experimenting with AI and work out where it can genuinely make a difference.

That might mean helping individuals use AI more effectively, automating repetitive work, redesigning a workflow around AI, creating new tools or exploring opportunities that simply weren't practical before.

  1. Good

    AI helps me.

People use AI to do their existing work better.

  2. Better

    AI works for me.

AI starts doing useful things automatically.

  3. Power

AI does a job in the organisation.

Complete workflows can be redesigned around AI - reporting, audience analysis, administration, marketing, finance or other organisational processes.

  4. God Mode

    Things start joining up.

AI-enabled workflows, systems and data begin working together across the organisation.

You don't need to get to God Mode.

The point is to understand where you are, where AI could genuinely help and what the sensible next step looks like.

Data & Insight

“We've got plenty of data. Are we getting enough value from it?”

Most organisations aren't short of data.

The harder problem is turning it into something useful.

I can help you understand what data you have, how it joins together, what questions it could answer and how it can support better decisions.

In cultural organisations that might include understanding audiences, loyalty, income, fundraising, attendance, operations or organisational performance.

The goal isn't more dashboards.

It's better decisions.

Technology & Systems

“Are our systems helping us - or getting in the way?”

Organisations accumulate technology.

Ticketing systems. CRMs. Finance platforms. Websites. Email platforms. Collaboration tools. Specialist systems. Spreadsheets that quietly became business-critical five years ago.

I can help you understand the technology landscape, where the problems are, what needs to connect, what might need replacing - and what is perfectly good enough already.

I can also help evaluate technology suppliers, challenge proposals and support significant technology decisions.

Sometimes the best technology decision is not buying any more technology.

Cyber Security, Privacy & Governance

“Are we managing our technology and data risks properly?”

Technology creates opportunity, but it also creates responsibility.

I can help leadership teams understand their technology risks, think through cyber security, access to data, privacy, GDPR, governance and the implications of introducing new technology such as AI.

I've worked extensively with GDPR and data protection and prefer to build privacy and security into projects from the beginning rather than bolt them on afterwards.

This isn't about trying to eliminate every risk.

It's about understanding the risks you're taking and making conscious decisions about them.

Innovation & New Opportunities

“Could technology let us do something we couldn't do before?”

This is the bit I particularly enjoy.

Sometimes technology isn't about fixing something.

It creates an entirely new possibility.

I help organisations explore those ideas, work out whether they're viable and find quick ways of testing them.

That might mean research, a prototype, an experiment or building something small enough to discover whether the idea deserves to become something bigger.

“Could we…?”“Let's find out.”

Technology Leadership

“Who is looking across all of this?”

AI, systems, data, security and innovation don't exist independently.

Decisions in one area affect another.

Sometimes the most valuable thing I can provide isn't a project at all.

It's someone sitting alongside the CEO and leadership team who understands the whole technology picture, helps establish priorities, challenges assumptions, works with suppliers and keeps an eye on what's coming next.

That's the CTO part of Fractional CTO.

The important bit

These aren't six separate services.

  • AI
  • Data
  • Systems
  • Security
  • Innovation
  • Leadership

Real problems rarely fit neatly into boxes.

An AI opportunity might involve data, systems, privacy, security, people and organisational change.

A systems problem might actually be a process problem.

A data problem might turn out to be a technology problem.

And sometimes the thing that looks like a technology problem isn't really about technology at all.

My job is to join those things up.

You bring the problem.

Together, we'll work out what it needs.

Not sure where your problem fits?

Good.

You don't need to diagnose it before we talk.

If there's something that's frustrating you, worrying you, or making you think:

“Surely there must be a better way of doing this?”

That's enough to start.
