Fractional CTO

Why a Fractional CTO?

You might not need a full-time CTO. But you increasingly need the skills of one.

For most cultural organisations, employing a full-time Chief Technology Officer would be difficult to justify. You may not need one five days a week - and the cost of another senior executive role may simply not make sense.

But the need for that expertise is growing.

AI is changing what's possible. Cyber security is becoming harder to ignore. You have more data than ever, but may not be getting enough value from it. Your systems need to work together. Technology suppliers need managing. And decisions that once felt operational increasingly have strategic consequences.

Technology has become a leadership issue.

And for many CEOs, the challenge isn't recognising that technology matters.

It's knowing what to do about it.

Sound familiar?

Do you recognise this?

  • “I know AI is important, but I'm not really sure what we should be doing with it.”

  • “We've got lots of systems and data, but they don't really join up.”

  • “I'm not confident I know whether we're doing enough about cyber security.”

  • “Lots of people make technology decisions, but nobody really owns the whole picture.”

  • “We've got ideas for how technology could improve things, but nobody has the time or expertise to make them happen.”

  • “I need someone who can help me work out what matters - without trying to sell me a massive new system.”

These aren't really IT problems.

They're leadership problems involving technology.

That's where a Fractional CTO comes in.

A Fractional CTO gives you access to experienced technology leadership without creating another full-time executive role.

Think of me as part of your leadership team - just not five days a week.

I help you understand what's changing, decide what matters, identify where technology could make a genuine difference and turn those decisions into action.

That might mean helping you work out what AI means for your organisation. Improving how you use audience or organisational data. Challenging a technology supplier. Understanding your cyber risks. Joining up systems. Exploring a new digital idea. Or simply helping you make a difficult technology decision with confidence.

And my role can change depending on what you need.

Sometimes I'll advise.

Sometimes I'll lead a project.

Sometimes I'll roll my sleeves up and build something to prove an idea works.

Why fractional?

Because you probably don't need all of that expertise all of the time.

I can work with you for a few days to understand or solve a particular problem. I can lead a focused project over several months. Or I can become an ongoing part of your leadership team for a few days each month.

  1. Problem
  2. Project
  3. Ongoing leadership

A problem might lead to a project. A project might uncover the need for ongoing support.

Or it might not.

The point is to have the right level of technology leadership when you need it - without building a technology department you don't need.

An advantage that's easy to overlook

You also get the benefit of everything I'm learning elsewhere.

Technology is moving extraordinarily quickly - particularly AI.

Simply keeping up with what's changing, working out what's genuinely useful and separating it from the hype takes a significant amount of time.

As a Fractional CTO, that's part of my job.

I'm continually researching, experimenting, building and working with different organisations. That means you benefit not just from the days I spend with you, but from the learning and experience I'm gathering the rest of the time.

And because I work across different organisations and problems, I can bring ideas and perspectives from outside your organisation too.

You're not paying me to learn about technology.

You're accessing the benefit of someone whose job it is to keep learning about it.

That's one of the advantages of fractional leadership that's easy to overlook.

It's not really about technology.

The aim isn't to introduce more systems, more AI or more complexity.

It's to use technology to help your organisation do more of what it exists to do - whether that's reaching audiences, increasing income, making people's jobs easier, reducing risk or creating something that wasn't possible before.

Perhaps we should talk.

You probably don't need a Fractional CTO if everything is working perfectly.

But if you've found yourself thinking:

“I know we need to do something about this. I'm just not sure what.”

That's probably a good place for us to start.
